Sugar Highs: Do They Really Exist?

On Halloween night and many other sugar-coated occasions, many of us will be experiencing lots of candy going into little bags already full of little sugary treats. However, once the night is over and the candy trading negotiations are almost over, the little business people soon become a little wild. Many believe this spike in energy involves a beloved rush, or a ‘sugar high’ per se. But on the contrary, as many scientists now believe, there really is not a sugar ‘high’ at all. If a person were to do a little research on their own, they will find that a sugar ‘high’ may just be caused by the highs and lows caused by the body’s regulatory activities as it desperately tries to achieve a balance of glucose in the blood. The human brain is fueled by the blood sugar, glucose. In fact, it takes around 20% of all the carbohydrates we put into our body to run it. However, the brain is a little picky about how it likes to take in all the sugars. It prefers to take in a steady stream rather than spikes and constant rushes. The major rushes of sugar into the blood is caused by intake of simple carbohydrates often found in candy, soda, corn syrup and processed flour products. These foods will cause wild ‘ups and downs’ as the sugar is instantly transported into the bloodstream. This rapid rise causes a rush of another kind. As the balance of sugars in the blood goes off-kilter, the pancreas begins to rush out insulin which pushes sugars out of the bloodstream and into tissues causing an ‘sugar low’ enough to cause a kid to start singing John Lee Hooker songs, or even ‘The Candyland Blues’. This experience is caused by the lunging sugar levels also known as hypoglycemia. Once hypoglycemia kicks in, this is when the next rise in energy occurs from the release of adrenal hormones that begins to take stored sugars in the liver out into the blood to restore the, now too low, blood sugars back to a normal level. This could be interpreted by some as a ‘sugar high’. With all of this up and down activity taking place, something else is affected. The highs and lows of blood sugar and adrenal hormones can cause an imbalance in the body’s neurotransmitters. This imbalance will cause individuals to feel irritable, fidgety, inattentive, and sleepy and so on. So overall, it is obviously not the sugar itself that causes the ups and downs associated with sugar intake; it is our own adrenal hormones and blood sugars being regulated. There was once a myth a long, long time ago when individuals thought sugar was within the same company of other drugs which we commonly refer to as narcotics. So before your little costumed pirate on Halloween suddenly becomes a handful after relishing the ‘booty’ from their latest found treasure, it may be a good idea to help ration some of the ‘goods’ or maybe even get a little for yourself. Understandably, most of these little ones tend to horde all the good stuff for themselves while sticking you with the little random generic peanut bar thingy. That’s ok. It should be a parent’s responsibility to watch the young ones enjoy their big night and take a few pictures too. But, if things tend to get a little wild soon thereafter, it is not because of a ‘high’, but their little blood sugar levels going up and down. Don’t say we didn’t warn you! After Having an Affair: Assessing the Damage and Focusing on Healing

Nearly 20% of all marriages seem to involve affairs and infidelity as I have read recently. While this is quite a large number, many of the marriages are able to ‘bounce’ back. How is this possible? While there are no quick-fixes, there are many ways. But in order to really make things work, it will always inevitably require a bit of discipline. For the victim, it is never an easy thing to get over no matter who you are or what type of relationship you are in be it a marriage or dating. Infidelity is always a heartbreaking occurrence. Dealing with it afterwards is always the hardest part once the person has learned the truth and now wants to know all about it.One of the major things when attempting to recover from a cheating spouse is to keep away from the disturbing thoughts of how things were ion the affair and any details of the sexual activity that may or may not have taken place. Bringing these sorts of images in your mind only makes things worse in the long run if you still feel there can be a relationship and healing in the future. Also, controlling your anger towards the adulterer will also allow more space for them to heal as well. Many adulterers do feel remorse for what they have done. And though it may feel just and right to drill them with anger rooting from your betrayal as the victim, it may be a better idea to keep those intentions to yourself for a time when both of you agree to allow one another to vent or even during time with a professional counselor. This is one option that should not be overlooked. It is a professional counselor’s job to see to it that even though the forests have been burned and there is much blame and spite to go around about who and what caused it, they will see to it that the emotions inside are accounted for and resolution will gradually find its path. While resolution may find its way, there are many reasons why those involved in relationships such as these actually do the things they do. Most times it seems that those getting involved in an affair are not seeking sexual gratification, it merely has to do with the relationship itself. When neither the adulterer nor the victim will really blame themselves when an affair is involved, both sides must look at the relationship and really assess what is not being agreed upon and what the trouble is in order to mend the things which cause one side to begin looking elsewhere for their needs. Other reasons could simply be because of low self esteem or even a search for self sort of phase where the individual wants to find out more about themselves as they feel there may be more out there than just what they’ve got right now in their life. In many cases, it has been something that has been learned from another family member. Possibly, a child witnesses their own parents having affairs or has just learned to accept that affairs are realities as the examples are everywhere.Whatever the reason is, if an affair has taken place and both sides now know the truth, then it is time to begin the healing process. It is not a pleasant process at all, but a growing process. Both sides must commit to resolving the issues which caused such infidelity to occur and let the healing begin. I am not saying that every person will forgive their spouse for having an affair, but I am just letting those who do not want to end their long history with their spouse and feel they can forgive and that there really is hope for the both of you. If this is how a person feels then try not to be angry and spiteful and look more towards finding the solution through first contacting a counselor in your area. This will begin the process of bringing to the surface those things which really make the difference between you and your loved one and begin the path of healing. Dining Out: Top Things You Should Always Expect During Your Proper Dining Experience

Have you ever decided on a whim just to treat yourself and your family to a nice dinner only to discover once you arrive at your chosen restaurant that it may turn out to be much more like something you’ll regret? Sure. All of us have been there many times. But, honestly, this should never ever be happening. These are businesses and in order to stay in business, they need to take care of their paying customers. I have provided some tips for both families and individuals for things to look for before spending any well-deserved time or money into a negative dining experience and for restaurants desiring some simple and honest feedback from customers desiring to share their opinions. Recently, I took a group over to a restaurant for a friend’s birthday. It was a pleasant atmosphere and, unfortunately, that is where it ended. You see, we had made reservations and informed the restaurant that some of our guests would be running a bit late. They said it would be ok. To our surprise, as soon as we got there, we were told that we could not sit down until a majority of our party has arrived. I would like to add that there were plenty of open tables, but none suited for this group. They did give us and the kids along with us the option to sit at the bar if we would like. We, of course, declined. Our guests did not arrive. We finally negotiated a table in the very, very back of the restaurant as it would not be one those with qualified reservations would desire. Mind you, everyone had dressed very nicely and there were no complaints. After waiting a bit too long, I decided to work out the table that no one would be demanding as all we wanted to do was get our appetizers going. As we sat at our table, the music was blaring and a local fraternity was there having a meeting at a reserved table that a majority had arrived in time to be seated at. To make a long story short, the service turned out alright and we decided to keep it positive and not let this situation affect us negatively. We did have a fun time. Afterwards, I began to think about some things that people and restaurants alike should always consider when about to make a transaction. First, when first walking in the door, guests should always be greeted nicely and instantly feel a warmth of hospitality. Customers are not just another check for the restaurant’s books. Next, if a party makes a reservation for 6 pm and the restaurant accepts it, the restaurant should always honor this promise. The guests should never have to wait for over an hour just because someone overslept. Getting seated in a timely manner would only be the most courteous thing for a business to do. That is if a dining experience is what they are selling. Next, when you are seated, you should never be stuck in the back of the restaurant just because those with reservations who have not shown up yet or even those ‘regulars’ who like that large table in front at 6pm prefer it. Every guest should be treated like everyone else. In addition, if customers do decide to have something at the bar, the customer should always have the right to transfer that amount to their bill. This method of making customers close out their bills over and over really is not an example of customer service at all. Try to keep things more convenient for the customers. The bill should be handled at the table when the service is complete. Many restaurants do not seem to recognize that many people do not prefer loud music when they are spending a lot of money dining out. Many prefer a pleasant atmosphere. Why many restaurants that normally serve elegant dinners jam 80’s tunes is not understood by me, but one thing restaurants should consider is that the noise level only makes things louder, including the kids. A few more things I would like to mention are in regards to the withholding of certain items such as wine lists and other special menus. Just treat each customer equally. I have witnesses this at restaurants where we received these menus but the other table ordering just water to drink did not. All customers should be treated respectfully meaning keeping positive judgment on people. At the beginning of the meal, if the customer does not want the special, yet, would like a description of one of the regular items on the menu as if it were the special, the waiter should be able to do that. This is oftentimes rather annoying to many people dining out. Maybe restaurants should quiz their employees from time to time? Surely there are plenty of things a person could complain about, such as no salt and/or pepper at the table, or even proper utensils, but the goal here is not to bring anyone down. The goal is to simply make other people aware of some of the things people go through when all they wanted was a nice dinner experience. These things should be a foundation with not just the restaurant business, but with any business. As it seemingly gets more and more competitive daily, wouldn’t it be a great idea to treat those who are helping you out with the utmost respect and dignity? One thing to remember is that if those businesses that do not honestly make customer satisfaction their number one priority will surely find many more that will.S. Smoking vs. Erectile Dysfunction: What Are the Risks?

New studies done recently have shown that there is a link between smoking cigarettes and erectile dysfunction. But how bad can it really get? There is still a lot to learn, but some new discoveries have been revealed. The more men smoke, the more they risk developing erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction is the inability for a male to keep an erection long enough to complete satisfactory sexual performance. The recent study was done on over 4,700 Chinese men between the ages of 35 and 74 who had no blood disease and were sexually active in the past half year. This was the first study of its kind to be done on healthy men as opposed to those with hypertension and other problems which could potentially skew the tests. The tests concluded that men who were smokers had over a 40% greater chance of developing erectile dysfunction than those who did not smoke. And the more the person smoked, the higher their risk of developing erectile dysfunction. When comparing the smokers with non-smokers, smokers who only smoked 10 cigarettes a day only had about a 27% likelihood while those who smoked 11-20 had 45% chance, and those who smoked 20+ cigarettes a day had a 65% greater chance of developing erectile dysfunction over those males who did not smoke. So in response to the recent study it can be estimated that nearly over 20% of erectile dysfunction cases can be attributed to smoking. This study is very important as it shows even more effects on smoking today. Not only do those who smoke 20+ cigarettes per day increase their risk of developing erectile dysfunction by around 65%, but it has also been found that the risk does not go away after a man decides to quit smoking. There are no reasons to start or even continue smoking with these kinds of studies showing more and more problems with the habit. As a kid, the first cigarette can be quite a traumatic experience. After that first one, you start to feel quite a bit nauseas and dizzy and its not too much fun. Why is that? Because it is simply a person’s body reacting to poison. Ultimately, if and when a person finally overcomes these natural objections they begin to risk even more than erectile dysfunction but also cancer, emphysema (breakdown of lung tissue), organ damage, and heart disease. It is estimated that every single cigarette that is lit up takes around 5-20 minutes off of a person’s life. Overall, everyone knows what kind of effect smoking has on our bodies. It is understandable that it is quite a heavy addiction that is very hard to get rid of for many people. But, for those who have not realized all of the problems that will inevitably arise through regular use, please remember that it doesn’t just cause more wrinkled skin and yellow teeth, but severe lung damage, greater risk of illnesses, slower healing times when injured, and much more will also occur if nothing is done to help prevent this habit from being treated. And if you do want to stop smoking, there are plenty of resources online as well as with the American Cancer Society. For some, quitting cold turkey has really worked for them. For others, it may require a slower pace in order to quit. The possibilities are endless. However, if you are a smoker or considering it, consider all of the facts before taking that next hit. It will be the hit that changes your life for the better…inevitably.

Video Resumes: Are They Really Hurting You?

Video resumes seem to be gaining a lot of media exposure these days. Many of the websites that provide the video resume services have really been pushing the need to have such an ‘edge’ over the rest of the competition. So what do the potential employers really think about these new services? Well, after hearing from prospective employers searching for applicants, one did mention the new and well-hyped video resume. However, he did not mention anything wonderful and amazing about the individuals he observed. He only mentioned the humorous things about them versus any serious attributes to the individuals on the videos. Some things mentioned about the videos is just the lack of preparation, annoying habits and gestures, terrible quality of editing which makes the video hard to watch, as well as the common embarrassing problems associated with ‘home videos’. The question now is: are the video resumes really hurting the job applicants making them rather than giving them that competitive ‘edge’ they are supposed to have? Many of us have already seen, or at least heard about, the video of the young man applying for a job on Wall Street as a banker where he bench presses very impressive amounts of weight, plays tennis and, well, you get the picture. This seems to be taken to the extreme, but it was actually supposed to be a message to the employer about his sense of discipline. Oops! I guess they misunderstood him as he did not receive any attention except from the news media. The attention he received was only from a mere entertainment standpoint. Many of the videos that are available do indeed appear to be more of an embarrassing moment than that of a competitive edge. The concept of the video resume seems to be quite impressive at first glance. And maybe after a little more time, it will become a norm in hiring new employees. But the fact of the matter today is that employers are not really looking towards video resumes at this point. What is a person to do in order to get a competitive advantage in the job market then? First, a video is not going to really show the employer any more about your accounting skills than what your job experience is like. The best way to really be ‘seen’ and experienced is through face-to-face contact. This is easy for me to say, but the employers that I know do attend industry events regularly and meet new people as well as prospective employees regularly. There is no really easy way to get the job that a person has always wanted. There will always be competition. And with plenty of competition there will always be no substitute for hard work in the industry you have chosen. Tennis skills are great, but only if that is where you can meet the individuals who can really help you get ahead in many cases. Gaining any kind of experience in the field a person is really after is what the employers are searching for. Overall, the hiring experience can be difficult for both the employer and the applicant. Both sides have needs to be filled. The employer in the IT department just needs someone who can handle the tasks and problem solving skills needed to complete the job in the most excellent manner. The video resumes have not been much help to him as they only show individuals talking about themselves and how they can function. However, when the employer does call in an employee for an interview, they also have them complete a test which really shows the applicants’ problem solving abilities. So, with this being said, will video resumes really take a competitive position in the resume market? Hollywood has been using them for years now in the form of video headshots. But, then again, these would be used for show business jobs where looks really matter. Focus on building experience and a great resume, as well as attending those industry events and soon job seekers will find many more wonderful opportunities before them. Now that would be quite a competitive advantage.

Foreclosure: What Homeowners Can Do to Help Avoid Foreclosure

These days, especially in areas such as California, many individuals are beginning to feel the after-effects of the recent housing bubble while running into a few financial problems along the way. Lenders have been laying off employees, several sub-prime lenders have gone under and it seems there is no escaping the realities of this current housing situation. There are many things a person can do in order to avoid a bank foreclosure.First, the bank does now want to own the property that they may eventually have to foreclose on and the home owner obviously does want to keep their home. So what sort of things can a homeowner do in order to help their situation? The first thing to do would be to see where exactly they can save money on monthly expenses. Are there any ways to cut back costs on entertainment, such as eating out? Are cable TV and the best cell phone plans really worth the cost? How much gas does a household use? This can be a real cost cruncher as I have found that during winter months, the natural gas expenses can get astronomical at times. I would simply suggest to turn the thermostat down a bit to temperatures that are not so hot, but keep the place warm. Just enough that you may want to wear a sweatshirt to keep a little warmer can really make a big difference in the gas bill. Where are the other expenses? If the car payments are quite high, possibly consider one car. And as for insurance payments, there may be room to increase a deductible amount in order to lower monthly payments as well. When finding ways to save money are maxed out, where does a person go to? The only way would be towards finding a way to bring in more income. Maybe a second job would not be such a bad idea. Also, finding items such as jewelry and expensive golf clubs and such may be able to make enough money to keep the bills paid for a while. One thing that should be left alone in most cases would be the retirement savings. Pulling money from these accounts will only cost a person as well through items such as early withdrawal penalties and the like. Trying to get back up on top can be a painful process, but if it means saving the house a person lives in then maybe it’s not such a bad idea. The lender would absolutely agree. The lender ultimately wants you to keep a person’s home. Foreclosing on a home is an expensive process for the bank and they may not even get back as much as they need for the home. Many times there will be a better solution than foreclosure. The good thing is that the lenders are required by their insurers to work with individuals facing foreclosure. If a person speaks with the lender, they may be pleasantly surprised to find out that the lender can do lots of things to help a person out temporarily, such as suspending payments, paying less than the entire monthly amount (but making up for the rest later on), lowering the interest rate through a change in terms, or they may replace an adjustable rate with a fixed rate. Many times, the lender has been willing to take the missed payments and place them back into the balance and even lowering the monthly payments altogether, provided that the homeowner is willing to add more years on to the mortgage. After all other options have been exhausted and the homeowner simply will not be able to hang on to the home, there are more options in regards to getting through the tough times and avoiding foreclosure. Some other solutions could even be to find a buyer who is willing to take over payments if there is really nothing else that can be done and the person wants to get out of the situation. Or, if the market is really bad, the lender might agree to accept an amount that is less than what is owed on the home. If this is an option given to the owner, then it would be a much easier way to sell the home and avoid the damaging foreclosure process. If nothing else seems to work out, there is yet another option where the lender could possibly just accept the property through a deed in-lieu of foreclosure and the homeowners are cleared of the debt. Foreclosure is something that is extremely damaging to one’s financial record and should be avoided if at all possible. There are many different things a homeowner can do in a situation such as facing foreclosure and it would be advised to set up a meeting with the lender and discuss some of these options and possibly even more.

Managing Your Finances: What the Middle-Class Can Do to Help Keep Stable

As it is quickly becoming known, the middle-class is having a much harder time making ends meet than the generation before us. Why is this? Many goods have gotten cheaper, but many of our other expenses have gotten much more costly. Here are some tips to help keep things under control. First, if you are a couple, the best thing to do is to have a discussion with each other regarding your individual spending habits. Not an argument, but a conversation. A plan needs to be made and both sides will have to be on the same page as the other in regards to the dreaded expense issues. It should be decided up front what percentages of the total income should be divided up for such things as retirement (10%), short-term expenses (such as unexpected repairs) (5%), taxes (25%), car payments (10%), mortgage/rent (25%), and quite costly and most scandalous miscellaneous expenses (25%).By having a ready and set model by which to allocate your expenses, things will seem to run much more smoothly in regards to the old ‘cost creep’. If a person was to compare this model to what their spending today, they will in many cases see quite a difference, especially in the home payments area. Many families do end up paying more for a home just to be in an excellent area for their children’s schooling and such. This is a wonderful thing to do, but if you cannot afford the home then why risk losing it altogether? Downsizing, even in the same area, seems to be a smart choice. A friend of mine who has been doing well in business these days has already been approaching this idea and is currently in the process of moving into a smaller home due to the shifts in the economy. This will save them from losing it all and will continue to prosper once they get things back in order and lower those monthly mortgage payments. Another thing to consider would be renting even in the same area. This could save you the burden of the mortgage while you have more time to put more of that 15% savings (both for long term and short term) away. The important thing about surviving this current ‘storm’ in our economy is simply being able to recognize when you are in an unstable place financially. You know the gut feeling. Yes, the one that keeps you quietly staring off into space at the dinner table and at the ceiling at night. Why not possibly follow that gut feeling and start really opening up the books and have a conversation with both yourself and your other half before it really takes a hold on everyone? You can start lowering costs by looking at insurance plans and possibly raising the deductibles. This has really been effective in many cases as it lowers the monthly payment with many people. Speaking of monthly payments other than mortgages, the other expense that really gets to all of us is the inevitable car payments.Car payments are some of the most expensive and largest percentages of our incomes yet we still pay for that brand new vehicle. Why? I am actually still trying to figure that out, but in the meantime, I have actually just gone to a less expensive brand new car where I am able to pay months ahead of time and not having the big burdens of those big payments and interest. Some tips here may be, other than a lesser expensive vehicle (such as the Nissan Altima or Toyota/Scion series of vehicles), maybe consider just one vehicle versus two brand new cars? Remember, those interest rates are where the car dealers make so much money, in addition to car sales, of course. So maybe consider even getting something much cheaper that you could even find a way to finance yourself? I am sure there are far better rates out there that you can find through other banks and loan sources. Credit cards are that major thing that really seem to know how to keep our tensions high. So why do we use them? They are so easy to use. One simple payment, and done. However, that monthly payment can really be quite a traumatic sight at first glance many times. Putting more focus on simply spending cash would be a great idea for those who have the ‘cost creep’ problem reoccurring on a regular basis. By using cash often, you will see just how much you are spending and maybe it will help settle in the fact that knowing how much you spend is how you really ‘save’ money and build wealth. So if there is one thing to remember, take in the idea of really setting up a model similar to the ever-popular one mentioned at the beginning of this article. Really let one such as that settle in and follow it with discipline. If you don’t follow any sort of plan, you will surely fall into a financial setback that may cost you more than just a home, but years of making up to do with everyone involved. Take a step forward, if you haven’t already, and take a look at your situation and have that talk with your loved one. It may very well be one of the best talks you have had in a very long time.

Chocolate Cravings: Are Your Chocolate Cravings Caused By Something Living in Your Gut?

Why is it that while some people can seem quite indifferent when it comes to chocolate while others just cannot get enough of the age-old treat? Is it because of personality type? Good taste? Or something actually living in your gut? Modern research has shown that the cravings we have may very well be connected to the types of bacteria that are living in our digestive systems. Studies done at the Nestle Research Center in Lausanne, Switzerland have shown that individuals who did not crave chocolate a single bit actually appeared to have much different colonies of bacteria in their digestive system than those of the chocolate craving individuals. The tests done on the 22 individuals also showed that the differences did not simply end there, but also the chocolate lovers’ LDL cholesterol levels appeared to be lower than those of the non-chocolate lovers, as well as having higher levels of the amino acid known as glycine. However, the ones who did not crave chocolate also showed higher levels of taurine which is a substance used in energy drinks such as Rockstar. So what does all this mean? This is a hot topic in the science community today as they are just now figuring out why we as individuals crave different things to consume while others simply despise it. Soon researchers will be able to know just what bacteria colonies cause which cravings and we the people will have the freedom of choice…between bacterial craving subcategories? That would be interesting. To be sorted out by ‘style’ of craving custom made for the individual. They could create whole new diets based on just this concept. As research has, in fact, shown that intestinal bacteria indeed changes when people lose weight. Also, companies can use this information the other way around where they can actually attempt to change what we crave by what they, or anyone, places into our digestive system. Chew on that for a moment. All we would have to do is take out the ‘bad’ bacteria and replace it with the ‘good’ bacteria and then we will crave only fruits, vegetables, while simply dreading those sweet confections that have never let our tempted taste buds down? Very great stuff here. The good thing is just that, however. If we do have problems with losing self-control when it comes to junk foods and those foods high in fats, high fructose corn syrup, and such, we will be able to control those urges biologically rather than ‘torturing’ ourselves by attempting to pass those items whether it be on a menu or the grocery store shelf. This research appears to be quite an advance in technology and it seems to me that it may very well play a major role in the future of our daily diets and personalities. But does food really have that much of an impact on our personalities? Will our cravings, if altered, cause us to experience drastic changes in our personalities and daily attitudes, based on our cravings? This seems to be a logical outcome of such an advancement in science and technology. However, if there is one thing to remember it would be to keep it in the back of your head that some of those cravings you have deep down in your gut may be just that. A gut feeling that is not necessarily your own fault, but something that you yourself can control, if you so desire to and really put your mind to it.

Love and Marriage: Robots Designed to Replace Humans in Next Five Years?

Imagine the year 2040, our energy source is outer space and nearly everyone is happily married. However, a normal person cannot tell one thing by looking at many of these beautiful spouses. They cannot see that many of them are robots. True to form and a perfect match for the person beside them. Is this the future of happy relationships? Many scientists claim that it is. At first it may seem a bit strange to the average person, but there are, in fact, individuals who see this as something they would be seriously interested in if and when it appears within the next five years or so. Some of the new developers are Japanese scientists who are naming the new robot android Repliee Q1 Expo. She breathes like a human, flutters her eyelids like a human and even moves like a real human! The robot has over 42 actuators. But as I have come to understand, it is merely the tip of the iceberg as of present time.Who in the world would marry such a robot? Who knows. But there is evidence out there that there are indeed plans to develop more humanlike robots for the purpose of assisting humans with their every, and I mean every, emotional and physical need. I sit here now writing about this after doing much research on the subject today and realize that it may be quite accepted as a normal undertaking in the future where man will have the option to be with and marry whomever he or she pleases. This does bring up the question of ethics which is indeed a raging topic involving these sorts of things. But would it really be a bad thing for individuals who cannot actually find a partner who either loves them back, can put up with their personality or mental stability, or just cannot appreciate the way their appearance naturally is?Developers today are putting the pieces to the puzzle together for just this reason. They want to create a robot that ‘bonds’ with humans and provides all that our individual urges require. Now, this being said, I would say that is a marvelous idea for many of those who have problems socially or are displeased with what their current relationships provide them both physically and emotionally. Could a robot be an acceptable way to ‘fill in the gaps’ in relationships in the future? What if these ‘devices’ did actually come into play and replaced items such as the ever popular vibrator, dolls, prostitutes and such? What would this do to the future of our human existence? It is indeed truth that the technology is here to create such a robotic rendezvous. In 2006, Henrik Christensen, who is the founder of the European Robotics Research Network, predicted that people will be having sex with robots within five years. As there are already lifelike items a person can buy, now all they have to do is add some electronics and a little software, make some major adjustments and presto-whammo…you’ve got ‘love’ in the air. In contrast to that last statement, there are many skeptics on the subject, including many roboticists such as those a the Georgia Institute of Technology who do not think human-robot marriages will take place any time soon. So what is to come of these alternative ‘adjustments’ to our existence? Only time will tell, with a little ‘fine tuning’ and good hardware. After reading several articles on this subject, I have become quite intrigued by what these ‘walking iPhones’ will inevitably provide us fellow homosapians in the future. Here is a link to one article based on these robots: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4714135.stm Will they really be all that great? Will they sell like the wondrous Roomba? How much will they cost a fella to get their top notch ‘silichrome’ maiden? So it seems they have figured out the ‘nuts and bolts’ of our human needs, but we will just have to wait and see if all it will take is five years or even ten to nail everything in order to provided such an easily produced alternative way of living.

Resume Makeover Tips: Some Simply Effective Ideas

Your resume is the key to getting into those great interviews and, ultimately, getting the job. So what types of things do we all need to look out for when preparing or reviewing our resume? Included in this article are some of the most important tips a person can receive according to a few acquaintances in corporate human resources departments.
The first thing an individual should do once they begin the resume review process is to make sure there are no spelling errors! Yes, this seems obvious, but have you really looked it over thoroughly with your naked eye and not just the word processor’s spell check? You would be surprised how many things the spell check option will miss when solely depending on it as your ‘editor’. This is one of the most important things as it says a lot if a person does not spell correctly and/or tends to overlook the typos. Would you like to hire that person if you had 100 prospects for one job?
After the spell check has been completed and any errors have been corrected, start getting rid of the extra words such as “I” or “me” and just give the prospective what they want: a solid resume that is to the point. All the extra stuff does nothing but aggravate as this, too, is a sign that a person is not thinking about the potential employer or reader, but only about themselves. The employers just want the resume to get to the point as they are quite busy and do not have much time to look into each specific detail about your past history.
Speaking of history, one thing that is surprisingly common is for resumes to be in chronological order. The first job the interviewee ever had is, you got it, on the very top of the resume. Why? The only reason I am told is for a more functional resume for when a person is going into a completely different field and wants to show their consolidated experience in blocks. So the most recent employer/job should almost always be at the very top. The next tip I have received is, again, simplifying the resume for the reader. Only this time it is about getting rid of those extra statements that only the interviewee believes makes a difference at all. Rather than putting out a resume that looks a lot like this article with a lot of words jumbled together, shorten sentences and create bullet points in order to get to the point. Bold, italics and underlining should all be used sparingly and mainly for headings as too much can rally create a sense of ‘overdoing’ it and it can also aggravate the employer. Yes, they are aware that you really want this job, so show them what you have done to deserve it.
Finally, read your resume to yourself as if you were reading it to the potential employers themselves. Does all of this sound like something you would love to listen to if you were the employer? Does it keep you on the edge of your seat or just kind of leave you in a slightly lethargic state? If it is going to be simply about your past jobs and you know there are others waiting for the same interview, be the considerate one. Get to the point and let them decide based on your resume and who you are in person. They will already be able to tell a lot about you in the room during the interview just through your actions, so you won’t need to describe any of this in your resume. I hope these tips I have received were a little helpful if not more in giving you some helpful ideas on how to improve your resume today.

The Appendix: Researchers May Have Found Out Why We Have One

Our appendix seems to be an organ that is really only referred to when there are problems with it. It seems to have no function, yet we have one and as over 300,000 Americans who were hospitalized know, it can be deadly. So why do we even have one? Researchers at Duke University Medical School believe they have found the reason. Recently published in a scientific journal, surgeons and immunologists from Duke University have stated that the appendix actually does have a function and it has to do with germs. In our digestive systems there is a very large amount of bacteria which aids our digestive process. And supposedly there are more bacteria in our body than human cells. So what happens if we begin to lose a lot of the good bacteria which aids our digestive processes? Do we go to the store to get more? The doctor may have an answer, but our body has said something much different in our past. The appendix has the job of ‘housing’ good bacteria in the case where we may need a new batch of it in our systems. In a way, it refreshes our digestive system if the need ever came to be. However, these days the appendix is not needed as the germs that would be supplied by our appendix can easily be passed from human to human simply with our everyday contact.Going back hundreds and even thousands of years ago, the human populations on earth were not nearly as dense as they are today. Plus, epidemics such as cholera had fallen upon mankind and adding to the difficulties in producing good flora for our digestive systems. The good bacteria in our system is what helps our bodies break down and digest the foods we put into our bodies. If the good bacteria is not there then our bodies simply would not be able to complete the process of digestion as necessary. So many many years ago, humans needed a way to produce their own good bacteria for their digestive systems in order to survive. This is believed to be the reason we have an appendix. That ‘problem’ organ now seems to have an essential role in the evolution and survival of the human species. After all this information, some of you may think “I better not get that thing taken out cause you never know if and when I might just need it!” This would be a terrible choice, of course, as, again, we really do not have a need for it now. And unless the populations on earth go back to the way they were thousands of years ago, then it would be fine and urged to have the inflamed appendix removed before it potentially becomes deadly. Over 300 Americans die each year from appendicitis. So if you feel a pain down in there, then there should be no question about seeing your doctor and possibly having your appendix removed.

Emotional Stress and Memory: Why We Cannot Get Over Some Episodes in Life

Remember that first big breakup you just could not get over for the life of you? It lingered for months and even years. Maybe this is happening to you now and you don‘t know why it just won‘t go away? This is not necessarily because of the person, but it has to do with our brain. Researchers have found over the years that memories are actually formed in our brain through the strengthening on neuron connections that send and receive information. Now, when the memory is stressful on our emotions, what happens is there is an increase in the stress hormone called norepinephrine. As the stress hormone norepinphrine and how it actually affects our connections is still being researched we do know that those long-lasting emotional memories are due to the chemicals in our brains. However, too much of this chemical can indeed cause the opposite effect in which we discover a lapse of memory in regards to the particularly traumatic or emotionally stressful event. So are there any ways we can deal with the memories that do occur or are currently occurring? There are many ways that individuals deal with their breakups and it would vary with the person, the most popular choice among those I have spoken to in L.A. chose professional counseling. Also, another thing worth mentioning after looking into the subject I have found very interesting is that many people actually mention that hypnotherapy was their option of choice. Now, this is just after researching and questioning as I have never been involved in a hypnotherapy session in my life. I am simply relaying others’ responses. We have all gone through tough periods in our lives and many of us as still currently dealing with these problems. Britney Spears is a perfect example of a person who is experiencing quite a bit of emotional stress. However, it appears that she has taken an all to common and quite dangerous route in order to mask the pain of the trauma in her life. Many individuals I have know have used drugs and alcohol to cover us their emotional pain rather than seek counseling. They seem a bit overwhelmed and go into a complete tailspin. Believe me when I say this as it is true: regular usage of drugs and alcohol to mask pain will only send you down a path that will inevitably cause you to do more things that will become even more traumatic. If you are going through this level of emotional stress, please speak with someone who is a professional, a psychologist. They are there to help you and they work with similar cases daily so there is absolutely no reason to be ashamed of anything. One thing to remember is that our emotional stress is caused by the chemicals in our brain, namely the stress hormone norepinephrine. There are many ways to deal with such emotionally stressful situations in life, such as those very painful break ups, and there are professionals out there who understand your plight and sincerely want to help you. As it is sometimes the best choice to go out and get drunk after a break up, try to keep away from a regular drinking/drug binge and just seek counseling if you feel that tail spin coming on. Emotional stress is real and it is just part of our nature. Once we understand it, we can begin to really do things to help ourselves feel better so we can begin to create more of those long-lasting ‘perfect memories’ that keep us smiling daily.

Alternative Medicine: Knowing What Works and Buying Into the Real Thing

These days it seems there are far too many claims that a particular herbal supplement can do many extraordinary things that not even doctors can figure out. The people selling these ‘miracle drugs’ attempt to impulse you straight to your pocket book…and succeed every day. Fortunately, there are ways to protect yourself from fraudulent claims and purchasing products that actually provide you the real ingredients of what you thought you were buying. There are two major organizations that have made it their job to validate the alternative supplements and allowing the placement of their stamp of approval on the approved products. These two organizations are the United States Pharmacopoeia and NSF International. One piece of advice: never buy anything that claims to be an alternative treatment without first finding this stamp of approval. Why risk it? it is these organizations jobs to seek out and approve all the products that actually follow through with what they say. So if the stamp is not there, then it may very well mean that it has not been approved. That being said, there are many products out there seeking their approval but some have really managed to stand out as some of the more effective alternative medicines, thanks to the research done at universities such ad Harvard, Duke, and Stanford. These universities have been making it one of their main goals to research and find what herbal remedies really work and how. Several years of research have already been conducted and many alternative medicine practices have been deemed as effective. Some of those effective alternative medicines include: acupuncture for pain, guided imagery (focusing on breathing and relaxation while taking the patient to another ‘place’), as well as glucosamine for joint pain. Also mentioned were alternative treatments for PMS using such supplements as calcium, magnesium, and vitamin B6 which all can have an impact on bloating and other strong effects of one’s period. For depression, it has been validated that St Johns Wort has evidence of it’s effectiveness for reducing the symptoms. However, those taking the supplement will more than likely not see any effect until after six to 8 weeks. So when you hear the claims that a certain herb will cure those things which man has not been able to figure out after all the decades of research, maybe it would be a good idea to do a little of your own research. Find a valid practitioner who can assist you in finding the right alternative medicines and treatments which would be best for you. Valid practitioners are those who have actually studied alternative medicine and are included in the Consortium for Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine and who have a background in alternative medicine. If you do not seek professional advice, then make sure you look for the “USP” of “NSF” stamps of approval on the products before making your purchase.

Carbohydrates and the Brain: Why We Cannot Afford to Cut Carbs Out of our Diets

For people on weight loss diets and just trying to keep the carbs down to a minimum in their diets, we have a little news for you. In order to function properly, our brain requires quite a significant amount of fuel in the form of glucose in order to receive, process, and retain information throughout or daily lives. Without complex carbohydrates, our bodies will tend to feel weakened, a little ‘spaced-out’, and sometimes even faint. So what you are telling us is that we now have to add lots of carbs to our diets? Precisely. However, many people get simple and complex carbohydrates a bit confused sometimes and this is what this article is all about.
Too much sugar in our diets can really cause some damage. It can cause insulin levels to go through the roof, causing risk of diabetes, it can cause us to feel confused, irritated and even dehydrated when taking in the simple and refined sugars from liquid candy and sodas, for example. And, nowadays, it seems we have no place to go as we are told that nearly everything can be bad for us, it seems. However, that is what the glycemic index is used for! First, I want to mention why we need glucose. Over 10% of our body’s energy goes straight to our brain as the cells that communicate with each other called neurons are always in a state of metabolic activity and those bioelectric signals are burning fuel like crazy. In other words, we are always thinking and we need fuel in order to run ourselves.
So, let’s get down to it. There are two main types of carbohydrates. Simple and Complex carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are found in most of the processed and refined foods (like candy and corn syrup) and maybe some natural foods. They consist of short-chained sugar molecules that easily break and can rapidly be absorbed in our bloodstream creating that rush we have all experienced. The downside here is that the pancreas then to compensate, pumps out its high levels of insulin. We all know what lots and lots of insulin causes: diabetes. But, complex carbohydrates are different. They are more like ‘time-release’ capsules of energy that will optimize our brains performance.
The time-release function of complex carbohydrates is caused by the cellulose fibers that surround the sugars and slow the digestion process and spread out that energy output, keeping us in good shape. The liver then breaks down the longer strains (thus complex carbs) into the shorter ones (kind of like the simple carbs, in a way) and then allowing it into our blood. Now, if we don’t have the right amounts of glucose from this process, our brains will begin to tire out quickly and we will end up with a harsh case of the ‘out of it’ sensation that many experience when on straight protein diets. You have to get those carbs in there, but the right ones!
How do we find these right sources? I’ve got a little bit of information here to help get you educated on more common foods In order to help make the best decisions when making it your goal to optimize your brains performance. Please note that the lower the glycemic index number, the more gradual the release of glucose in your bloodstream which minimizes blood sugar swings and optimizes focus and brainpower.

Overall, we must always keep complex carbohydrates as a part of our daily diet. There are many more reasons beyond the scope of this article, such as strokes and mental decline due to diabetes and more. But hopefully this will create some awareness of the real risks involved with some of today’s proposed diet plans and popular products heavily marketed in stores today. The brain is obviously one of our most essential pieces of equipment and we must treat it accordingly. If you like cars, look at it this way: you would give that Corvette Stingray with the 457 under the hood the special fuel it needs, so why not the generator which makes all of your motors run?

Weight Loss Tips: How The Most Successful Dieters Keep The Weight Off

Everyone these days seems to be on some sort of diet. Whether it is weight loss related or keeping in good health, the diets are ideally the same. However, there are a couple types of dieters when it comes to weight loss. The first type is the disciplined dieter, the one who had the weight once in their life and will do just about anything to never take it back. And then there is the “why me?” dieter who just cannot seem to get that last 20 pounds off for the life of them. These individuals try every diet plan and diet pill in the book. So why isn’t it working? Because the truth is: there aren’t any magic solutions. The only way to get the weight off and keep it off is by your own doing.
Simply saying something like “keeping the weight off is all about your doing” seems easy for a fit, healthy, disciplined person, but what about those who aren’t born with those same qualities it seems these lucky ones have? The answer to that is that life is just that. There just isn’t a ‘level playing field’ law in nature. However, each and every person questions this at some point in their life, including the ones in great shape. So how does a person born onto a less fortunate playing field get to where the ideal ones are? Through a lot of hard work. Losing weight is no easy task, but anyone can do it. I have known children who have lost over 20 pounds in 3rd grade. The ones who lost that weight had something many did not, will-power. You are the one who will decide whether or not it is time to lose weight.
First step in the process is acceptance of where you are at mentally and who you are losing this weight for. That person, by the way, must always be you. If your heart is not into it, the rest of you will ultimately decide not to follow. Many people do lose weight very quickly through the use of fad diets and weight loss pills. However, that weight is merely lost usually due to water loss, not too much fat loss. Fat is what you are targeting and that takes time. Maybe even 2 pounds a week. It takes a daily exercise schedule and quality diet to reap these rewards. Now while it is very possible that a person weighing 200 pounds could reach Paris Hilton’s weight, that sort of weight loss would come with some potentially dangerous health problems and a person should speak with their physician if they are planning to go to those extremes with their diet.
The most ideal weight a person should shoot for would be a weight that they feel most comfortable at. Whenever I see a person depriving themselves of food claiming they are “on a diet” I always have to ask them what exactly they are doing to achieve this. Their response is usually a look of disbelief that I asked such a question after seeing their plate, then they explain that they are just not eating. That is exactly the opposite of what a person is supposed to do. It is all about a healthy balance in consistent meals throughout the day. Now I am not a total expert, but I am quite an information junkie and I have done my research on this topic and this will not do it. It will only damage your body. In order to really lose weight and, most importantly keep it off, would be to educate yourself on eating healthy and exercising daily. I won’t lie when I say exercise either. You will need to have at least an hour or so or doing more than just walking down the block.
Did you know that when you are working out, the first 15 minutes or so is simply during the calories already in your system? No fat is burned until after this process is through. Weight loss is not easy, but anyone can do it. Some just have to work harder than others in many cases, but overall, everyone is required to have the same discipline in their daily routines in regards to their eating habits, exercise program, their mindset (remember, it has to be for you!), realistic goals, and most importantly, making sure that you cater your program to what you must take on while rewarding yourself continuously. These are the things the most successful individuals have referred to after losing the weight and keeping it off. Soon you will see it in all the great successes and once you see it and you believe it, it will be your turn to become it. Here’s to success!

Alzheimer’s Prevention: Do More ‘Driven’ Personalities Have a Lower Risk?

Alzheimer’s disease has been a serious illness affecting our population throughout the globe for a long, long time. Many professionals just cannot put their finger on precisely what causes this illness. However, recently there has been some impressive research done on personality types and how they affect the likelihood of acquiring the disease. When researching Alzheimer’s and how to prevent and/or slow down the onset of the illness as we age we usually hear things such as controlling your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Also, maintaining a healthy weight and diet rich in omega-3s has shown effective. Most of all we hear to maintain healthy mental exercise doing such things as puzzles and even socializing with others. All of these preventative measures have been shown effective towards slowing Alzheimer’s, but what about those people who never even have a bout with it at all? How do they do it?
Research has shown that more ‘driven’ personality types, or more conscientious and goal-oriented individuals, appear to have reduced their risk of Alzheimer’s. Now this is all based on tests done on around 997 priests and nuns at the age of 75. Out of all these individuals, 176 developed Alzheimer’s over 12 years. It seems that the individuals who are the ‘go-getters’ and the ones who really have a need to get things accomplished throughout each day are less prone to the disease through constant stimulation in their brains. Just like a crossword puzzle you can’t put down, so is life to many of us human beings. So, an individual’s level of motivation seems to be directly linked to their health. But, there are different kinds of stimulation which can be considered.
One form of stimulation and though is that of positive, goal-oriented thoughts as I just mentioned earlier. Those are the ones we want, as opposed to negative thoughts. Even worse that negative thoughts is worry. Worry not only manifests more negativity in your future, but it also appears to bring on potential dementia related illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease. Getting back to the recent studies of the 997 individuals, those with the highest scores for the “conscientious” personality trait were a whopping 89% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s as compared to those with lower scores of that personality type.
It appears as though what we think has a lot to do with our mental health not only in the present, but also in our future. What we think most definitely can and will manifest itself in different ways and most of us would more than likely prefer a more positive manner. So, maybe we should begin to reconsider how bad a ‘bad day’ really is. In order for us to live a healthy life, we need to focus on more positive things and not so much on what we don’t want or what the careless individual just did to us on the freeway. Getting upset about most of the things in our lives really only hurts ourselves. So, the one thing to remember as we all move forward is to keep our minds stimulated with positive thoughts and activities. Be more social, set more goals. Never forget you’re your passions and what you are here for in the first place. And most importantly, never forget your dreams. As they are the goals that will always keep you going.
